Australian Wine Styles - White Wine 

When it comes to Australian White Wines, there is much more than just Chardonnay Australian has to offer. Australian white wines has a unique story of their own to tell, Australian wine makers has a distinctive approach to producing Australian white wines which sets them apart from others, engaged in the same trade, in other parts of the world. 

When poured in to a glass, an Australian white wine can look anything from an opulent golden yellow – orange almost – to a palest lemon yellow.  The colour change, by the region the wine is coming from depending on how cool or warm that region is. The colour of the wine can also change according to the type of grape being used to making it as well.  

The wine’s colour can be an indication as to how it will taste i.e. the deeper it is the richer the flavour. Perhaps a good sniff will give a better clue. Delicious, concentrated ripe fruit, harvested in perfect conditions are abundantly available in Australia than almost anywhere else in the world. Different types of grapes, blends and regions produce white wines of different aromas, flavours and taste sensations that are uniquely Australian.

Different qualities of grapes being used to make Australian White Wine  

Chardonnay (:shar-don-nay)
Chardonnay is used to making an Australian white wine that has a hint of vanilla/oak flavours and plenty of ripe, melon/grapefruit to ripe peach fruit. Wines made of fruits from the coolest regions have much subtle, and predominantly citrus flavour.

Chenin Blanc
Chenin Blanc is used to producing an Australian white wine with appley and crisp acidity flavours.

Colombard
Colombard, often is blended with Chardonnay and sometimes Sauvignon Blanc. Alone this type of grapes produces a full-bodied wine with good acidity.

Gewurztraminer
Is used to making an Australian white wine that is predominantly spicy lychee, Turkish delight and floral flavours.

Marsanne
Makes an Australian white wine similar to Chardonnay and Semillon but is more honeyed, peachier and spicier.

Muscat
Muscat is used to producing sweet tasting Australian white wines.

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio
Goes in to making Australian white wines with a hint of buttery flavour that is spicier and richer. 

Riesling (:reez-ling)
 Rieslings are being used to make some of the greatest sticky sweet dessert wines. 

Sauvignon Blanc (:so-vin-yon-blahn)
Used to produce an Australian white wine with “grassy”, gooseberry characters, in warmer vintages passionfruit flavour is predominant with a touch of acidity.

Semillon (:semi-yon)
Goes in to making an Australian white wine with a distinguish taste of warm, peachy character.

Verdelho
Verdelho is used to make an Australian white wine with a Nutty/savoury.

Viognier (:vee-yon-yay)
These types of grapes are highly renowned for the stunning whites it makes in the Rhône,
